John E. Engel

John E. Engel passed away Wednesday night, October 26, 2022 at UTMC with his loving family by his side.

John was born August 10, 1939 in Defiance, the son of Forrest and Margaret “Betty” (Riley) Engel.  In 1958 he married Shirley Ann Davis who preceded him in death.  He then married Terry Stacy who survives.

John was an electrician for GM Powertrain in Defiance for 32 years, retiring in 1997.  He served in the Army National Guard for 25 years and the US Army Reserve for 5 years retiring as a Master Sergeant E-8.  He was affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America troop 262 Hamler, serving many years as an assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, unit committee member and as a member of the Eagle board of review.  John served along with his wife, Terry, as Disaster co-chair for the Henry County American Red Cross from 1999-2014.  He was also a lieutenant for the Napoleon Police Auxiliary for several years.  John loved being retired.  He loved being outside and could always find something to do.

John is survived by his children: Daniel (Sheila) Engel, Napoleon, Teresa (Michael) Erford, Malinta, Lisa (Grant) Sturgell, Napoleon, Michael (Joyce) Engel, Port Orange, FL and John Engel, GA; 22 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and one on the way and brothers: Victor (Mary) Engel, Holgate and Greg Engel, Napoleon.  John was preceded in death by his siblings: Jerry Engel, David Engel and Barbara Fischer; his son Robert Stacy and a grandson Craig Gobrogge.

Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Sunday from 2-4:00 and 5-7:00 pm and again one hour before the service.  The Celebration of John’s Life will be on Monday, October 31, 2022 in the funeral home at 11:00 am with Reverend Peter Marcis officiating.  Burial will follow in Riverview Memory Gardens.  Any memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
