Howard Emerson Rettig age 91, of Holgate died Monday afternoon, October 27, 2014 at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Holgate.
His Legacy… He was born December 4, 1922 to Harrison and Matilda (Hoff) Rettig in Holgate. In 1941, he married Marvell F. Engel. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Holgate and a self-employed milk truck driver and drove a dump truck for a contractor. He worked for Four County Career Center for 12 years as a custodian. Howard thoroughly enjoyed country music. Back in the day, he sang and played the rhythm guitar with his band “The Maumee Valley Boys”.
His Family… He is survived by his son, Gene (Sue) Rettig, Pioneer; a sister, Virginia Kite, Leipsic; care provider Kathy (Mike) Gustwiller, Holgate; 3 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marvell on June 15, 2004 and also by a brother Vernon Rettig, a sister Florence Baker, a grandson and a great granddaughter.
His Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, Holgate on Thursday from 1-4 and 6-8 pm and 1 hour before the service. The celebration of Howard’s life will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 31, 2014 in the Zachrich Funeral Home, Holgate with Reverend Greg Olsen officiating. Entombment will follow in Riverview Memory Gardens, rural Defiance. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Vancrest Health Care Center.
