Nancy L. Hoops

Nancy L. Hoops of Holgate and cherished member of her community, passed away on November 3, 2024, at the age of 86 at Vancrest of Holgate. Born on December 28, 1937, Nancy a radiant spirit whose life journey commenced in her hometown, setting the stage for a legacy marked by service, dedication, and love.

A proud graduate of Florida High School, she would go on to embrace a life characterized by a steadfast commitment to both her family and community. On April 20, 1958, Nancy married the love of her life, Donald Hoops, in a heartfelt ceremony at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Defiance. Together, they created a nurturing home and raised three remarkable daughters, who carry forward her spirit of kindness and dedication.

Throughout her life, Nancy's professional path intertwined with her community responsibilities. She served Holgate Local School for 30 years, most recently as the treasurer, ensuring sound fiscal management for the education of future generations. Beyond her professional accomplishments, her service continued to flourish through her volunteer work with the Henry County Board of Elections and the Holgate Chapter of the Child Conservation League, embodying her belief in the importance of civic engagement and support for the welfare of children. Nancy was a life member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church; Defiance was a church officer and member of the ladies aid and LWML.

Nancy’s greatest pride, however, lay not solely in her career but in her family. She is survived by her daughters: LuAnn (Nikk) Hogrefe of Liberty Center, Vicki Hoops-Russell of North Baltimore, and Mary (Chris) Merillat of Wauseon. The legacy of love she cultivated lives on through her grandchildren: Kaitlann (Logan) Shell, Seth Russell, and Eli Russell, who fondly remember evenings filled with stories and laughter shared in the warmth of her embrace.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Donald Hoops, who departed this world on November 28, 2019. Their eternal bond is a testament to the profound love that defined their life together.

Friends will be received in the Zachrich Family Funeral Home of Holgate on Wednesday from 3-7:00 pm and again at the church one hour before the service. The celebration of Nancy’s life will be on Thursday at 11:00 am in St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Defiance with Reverend James Haugen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
